after: ʻLA GOULUE AT MOULIN ROUGEʼ, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec - 1891-92, Museum of Modern Art, New York, United States of America. Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901) was from a wealthy, aristocratic family. Toulouse Lautrecʼs most famous images developed out of his association with the demimonde of Paris: a rabble of artists, poets, and prostitutes. Strongly influenced by Japanese prints, his daring compositions and poster designs almost single-handedly popularised the Art Nouveau style. ʻLa Goulueʼ was a famous can-can dancer.
after: ʻHENRY VIIIʼ, Hans Holbein the Younger - 1540, Galleria Nazionale, Rome, Italy. Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was a successful portrait painter of the British aristocracy. He painted many portraits of King Henry VIIIʼs court, amongst them the King's six wives. The portrait is painted in a very matter of fact style. Holbein used the camera obscura, an instrument invented in 1430, which allowed artists to make extremely exact representations.
