after Rembrandt portrait of woman with ostrich fan > go to info
mixed media on paper / 15 x 11 cm / 2004
The Rembrandt exhibition was some time ago (spring 2015). Again I saw the portrait of the ‘lady with the ostrich-feather fan’, one of the most beautiful portraits ever made This sketch is a little exercise after it. I made it to find out why it is so good. Copying is the best lesson. When I made it, I had a strain of thoughts. For many the poems of Reve (Droom) and Nijhoff (Moeder de vrouw), two great Dutch writers/poets, will not make much sense. I don’t even dare to translate their poems. For the Dutch; read them please.
It made me have this thought: 'Reading Nijhoff, Reve and others I realize that the Arts talk about the unreachability, the impossibility to be one with an other soul. Hence the fuss about deceased mothers.’
